The Best Bambu Lab X2D Upgrades: Which Ones Are Actually Worth Buying?

The Bambu Lab X2D is already one of the most capable desktop 3D printers on the market. With excellent print quality, an intuitive workflow and Bambu Lab's trademark ease of use, it raises an interesting question: is there actually any point upgrading it?

Over the past few weeks I've been living with five of the most popular upgrades available for the X2D to find out whether they genuinely improve the printing experience or simply add unnecessary cost and complexity. Some have become permanent additions to my machine, while others have left me questioning whether they were worth buying at all.

Here's what I learned.


Panda Status – A Small Upgrade That Makes a Big Difference

At first glance, the Panda Status from BIQU doesn't look particularly exciting. It's essentially an LED light bar that mounts beneath the front of the printer and displays the machine's current status.

I initially dismissed it as a bit of a gimmick.

After using it for several weeks, however, I've completely changed my mind.

One of the few minor frustrations with the X2D is that, from across the workshop, it's impossible to tell what the printer is doing. Has the print finished? Has it paused? Has an error occurred? Normally I'd reach for my phone, open Bambu Studio or check the camera feed just to find out.

The Panda Status solves that problem beautifully.

The LEDs progressively fill as a print advances, change colour depending on the printer's state and provide instant feedback without ever needing to open an app. It sounds like a tiny improvement, but when you have several printers running, it quickly becomes one of those features you use dozens of times a day without really thinking about it.

Installation is relatively straightforward, and once fitted it looks as though it belongs on the printer. It doesn't transform the X2D, but it does make living with it noticeably more enjoyable.

Build Plates – Useful, But Not Essential

Changing the build plate is probably the simplest upgrade you can make to any 3D printer, and there are now plenty of options available for the X2D.

I've experimented with several, including BIQU's CryoGrip Frostbite plate, textured surfaces and even decorative plates that leave patterns or sparkle effects on the bottom layer of prints.

Each has its own advantages.

The CryoGrip allows PLA to print reliably at lower bed temperatures, reducing power consumption while maintaining excellent adhesion. Textured plates create attractive finishes, while novelty plates can add a unique aesthetic to decorative models.

That said, it's important to keep expectations realistic.

Bambu Lab's standard build plates are already excellent. Unless you have a specific need—whether that's lower printing temperatures, specialist finishes or simply wanting to create eye-catching effects—you probably don't need to rush out and buy replacements.

They're enjoyable upgrades rather than essential ones, and they're best suited to users who know exactly what they're hoping to achieve.


Panda Vent – Brilliant Idea, Frustrating Execution

This is easily the most divisive upgrade of the five.

On paper, the Panda Vent is an excellent concept.

It raises the printer lid to provide additional clearance for the Bowden tubes, automatically opens vents to regulate chamber temperature, relocates the USB port to a more convenient position and even adds integrated lighting.

Those are all genuinely useful improvements.

Unfortunately, the buying experience tells a different story.

For a product costing over $100, I expected a premium accessory ready to install straight out of the box. Instead, what arrives is only part of the product. The electronics, motors and hardware are included, but the majority of the structural components have to be printed by the user before assembly can even begin.

Yes, as 3D printer owners we all have the ability to print those parts.

But that's not really the point.

I wasn't expecting to buy a week-long DIY project. I was expecting a finished commercial product.

Once assembled, the Panda Vent actually works very well. The automatic ventilation performs exactly as advertised, the additional clearance is useful and relocating the USB port is a surprisingly welcome improvement.

The issue isn't functionality.

It's the overall experience.

Compared to the beautifully engineered finish of the X2D itself, the printed components simply don't feel as polished. If BIQU eventually releases a fully manufactured version, I'd happily revisit my opinion because the underlying design is genuinely excellent.

As it stands, however, this is the one upgrade I'd struggle to recommend.


AMS HT – The Upgrade That Unlocks Engineering Materials

If there's one product that genuinely expands what the X2D is capable of, it's the AMS HT.

Before explaining why, it's worth saying who doesn't need one.

If you mainly print PLA, save your money.

The standard AMS already performs brilliantly.

Where the AMS HT comes into its own is when printing engineering materials such as nylon, carbon-fibre reinforced filaments, glass-filled polymers and moisture-sensitive support materials like PVA.

These materials absorb moisture remarkably quickly, and damp filament almost always leads to poor print quality.

The AMS HT solves that problem by drying filament at temperatures of up to 85°C while integrating seamlessly into the Bambu ecosystem. It looks and operates exactly as you'd expect from an official Bambu accessory, making it incredibly easy to incorporate into an existing workflow.

The biggest advantage is convenience.

Rather than constantly moving filament between dryers and printers, you simply leave it in the AMS HT, keep it dry and print directly whenever you need it.

It's not a cheap upgrade, but if you regularly work with engineering materials it's one of the best investments you can make for the X2D.


E3D ObXidian High Flow Hotend – Built for Demanding Materials

The final upgrade is aimed squarely at enthusiasts who regularly push their printers beyond everyday use.

E3D has built an outstanding reputation over many years for designing high-performance hotends and nozzles, and the ObXidian High Flow Hotend continues that tradition.

Replacing the standard hotend couldn't be simpler. Thanks to Bambu's quick-release system, the process takes only a few moments, making it one of the easiest hardware upgrades you can perform.

However, this isn't a product that everyone needs.

If your printer spends most of its time producing PLA models or household organisers, you'll see very little benefit.

Where it shines is with abrasive materials such as carbon fibre, glass-filled filaments and glow-in-the-dark plastics. These rapidly wear conventional nozzles, whereas the hardened ObXidian is specifically designed to cope with demanding applications while maintaining excellent flow characteristics.

It's a specialist upgrade for specialist users, but if your printing regularly pushes those boundaries, it's one of the highest-quality upgrades available.

Final Thoughts


The upgrades that make sense

The Bambu Lab AMS HT is useful if you regularly print moisture-sensitive engineering materials or want another protected filament path. For straightforward PLA printing, however, it may be more capability than you need.

A different build surface can be a genuinely useful change. The Bambu Lab build plate is the safe official option, while the BIQU build plates offer alternative finishes and adhesion behaviour. The right choice depends far more on your usual materials than on marketing claims.

The Panda Status adds clear visual printer-status information, and the Panda Vent tackles airflow around the machine. Both work, but they are convenience upgrades rather than essentials. For abrasive or high-flow materials, the E3D High Flow ObXidian 500 hot end is the more performance-focused option.
